How fast can you type? Measure your WPM in 15, 30, or 60 seconds
The average typing speed is around 40 WPM (words per minute). A speed of 60-75 WPM is considered good. Professional typists and office workers typically type at 65-75 WPM. Speeds above 80 WPM are advanced, and anything over 100 WPM is exceptional. The fastest typists in the world can exceed 200 WPM in short bursts.
Words Per Minute is calculated by counting all characters typed (including spaces), dividing by 5 (the standard word length), then dividing by the elapsed time in minutes. "Net WPM" subtracts errors: (total characters / 5 - uncorrected errors) / minutes. This test shows both raw WPM and adjusted WPM.
Focus on accuracy first, then build speed gradually. Use proper touch typing technique with all ten fingers on the home row (ASDF JKL;). Practice 15-20 minutes daily. Don't look at the keyboard. Start with easy common words, then progress to sentences. Consistent daily practice is more effective than occasional long sessions.
Children (ages 8-12) average 15-25 WPM. Teenagers average 30-45 WPM. Adults average 40-50 WPM. College students who type frequently average 45-60 WPM. Professional typists and programmers typically reach 65-90 WPM with practice.
Mechanical keyboards can improve typing speed and accuracy for many users due to tactile feedback and consistent actuation points. However, the biggest factor is practice and technique, not equipment. Membrane, mechanical, and laptop keyboards can all support fast typing with proper technique.
